A projector can be used during the day, but direct sunlight on the screen will wash out most portable home-projector images. The dependable solution is a combination of light control, suitable screen placement, verified brightness information and a sensible image size. Treat claims that a small projector “beats sunlight” with caution.

Control light at the screen first

Ambient light reduces contrast because the screen is already illuminated before the projector adds an image. Blackout curtains are helpful, but even ordinary blinds, moving the screen away from a window and switching off nearby lamps can make a visible difference. The goal is not always a dark room; it is keeping stray light away from the projected surface.

Ask how brightness was measured

“Lumens” without a measurement standard is usually a manufacturer rating and cannot be compared reliably across brands. Do not assume that a manufacturer-rated 7,000-lumen product is brighter than a projector with a lower ANSI figure.
